10 books to give your bookworm for Christmas!

Hi guys!

I need a break from my Methodology exam, so I decided that I’ll give you some tips on what to give your bookworm (or yourself) for Christmas if you need some inspiration. Christmas is sneaking up on us and the shopping has already started! Personally, I started in June haha, which is so typical of me. I love to start early to make sure that I find presents that people really will appreciate, and it also spares me the stress around Christmas when my exams steal too much of my time anyway.

This is my first time doing this, so let me know if it was useful to you and maybe I’ll make a tradition out of it! Not all the books are new, but sometimes it is amazing to give away «forgotten» treasures. I’ve bought two of the books on this list as Christmas presents myself!

10. Zarox by Louis Smith

This was my first book of 2018! It is a fantasy, young adult bordering on children’s book. It takes you to the magical world of Zarox where you’ll find trallops (my favorites!), glothers, and many other fantastic creatures! Perfect for anyone who loved Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter but needs something new. The world of Zarox will give you excitement, laughter, and action! PS! Rumour has it that this is a series, so there are more books to come in the close (?) future! This book is not available in Norwegian, only English. 9. The Seven Sister series by Lucinda Riley 

This series is amazing! The Seven Sister series is the stories of Maia, Ally, Star, CeCe, Tiggy, and Electra D’Apliese and their unknown pasts. It’s mainly Historical Fiction, and the books take you to all the different corners of the world! So far five books have been published, and I’ve read the first four, which I loved! The stories will pull you in and you’ll be glued to every page! Don’t let the size of the books scare you, the book will be over before you know it. 8. Turtles all the Way Down by John Green

I really enjoyed reading this book and I think it gave a very good and precise description of how it is to suffer from OCD. The main character’s name is Aza and she stumbles upon a mystery she feels like she has to solve with the help of her friend Daisy. This is a book written for young adults and it has many great aspects teens can relate to.  If you know someone who enjoys reading something contemporary, fiction and YA, then this could be right up their alley. It may not be suited for everyone due to Green’s writing style, I’m not his biggest fan personally, but this book was really great! This book has been translated to Norwegian. 7. The Lion Woman by Erik Fosnes Hansen 

This story was very different. I particularly enjoyed the clues hidden between the lines in the story. They really kept me engaged along with a great storyline. The main character, Eva, has a disease that is very rare and it makes it difficult for her to live her life like a normal person. This book is different and it is perfect if you need something to accompany your beverage and blanket during Christmas! The movie came out in 2016. This book is being translated to English, it has been translated to French, German, Swedish, Latvian, Turkish, Spanish, and Dutch, but originally it is Norwegian. 6. The White Witch by J. J. Morrison 

Looking for a fantasy read? This is the first book in a series based upon the times of King Arthur and his roundtable. Here you have romance, a prophecy, a curse and a mysterious White Witch. Iris Mortenstone is the daughter of Lord Mortenstone, the ruler of the Light. One day she wanders into the Dark Forest where she meets a figure that will change the life of herself and her family forever. This book can be enjoyed by young adults and adults alike. Personally, I enjoyed it because I’d never read something based on the Arthurian universe before, and I really liked it! It is entertaining, easy to read and perfect next to a cup of hot cocoa! 5. In My Fathers House by Ingegerd Henriksen

This is one of the books that made the biggest impression on me this year. The reason for this is the combination of the use of language, perspective and theme of the book. We meet Catharin, five years old and scared. She’s been told that she won’t see her sixth birthday. The story is written from Catharins perspective with the clarity only children can provide through their simple, yet meaningful language. This is a book about an important and hushed down theme, child abuse. It will leave you with many thoughts, and maybe a greater perspective on certain things in life. This book is only in Norwegian. 4. The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris 

A sad sunshine story from Holocaust. The Tattooist of Auschwitz gives you a different perspective on the life inside the concentration camps. It’s a story about hope and love in the darkest of places in history. Graeme Simsion has said about the book; I would recommend it unreservedly to anyone, whether they’d read a hundred Holocaust stories or none. I highly agree! I’ve lost count of how many books I’ve read about Holocaust and World War 2, but this story brought me something new, and I always appreciate that! 3. The Sentinel Trilogy by Joshua Winning 

Want to read an explosion of action while still being a fantasy and YA read? I give you The Sentinel Trilogy! I got it recommended from my very good friend over at bookmarkthat.co.uk so I had to check it out! The Sentinel Universe is full of monsters, secrets, and people living in secret from us regular mortals. A dangerous threat is waking and Nicholas has to figure out how to save the world from these threats. The journey becomes something he could never imagine! I finished these three books within the month of August. They can be read by teens or grown-ups, you’ll be glued to the pages either way! 2. Warrior’s Peace by Lasse Gallefoss 

One of few crime novels that has brought back my love for crime novels this year and a debut author! The story takes place in Norway post World War 2 and the Cold War is looming. Storm Steinset is working for the Norwegian Police Force, but during the war, he was a double agent and worked for Gestapo. When several policemen who worked for the Nazis during the war were found dead of the same torture methods they themselves used during the war, Storm realises that he too must be on the killer’s death list. At the same time he has been assigned to investigate the case. This book will keep you on your toes, and the plot is not easy to figure out, so if you want a real brain twister over the Christmas break, this is the book for you! This book is only in Norwegian.  1. Keep Saying Their Names – Simon Stranger 

This book is my top recommendation this Christmas! A Historical novel that is both well documented and intriguing in every aspect! I can not praise it enough! Out of his own family history, Simon Stranger discovers some dark secrets about a man who turned sides during the war, a house full of horror, and how his family came to be the way it is at present day. This is a story based on true events. It won the BookShop Award of 2018, and it was very much deserved! I was glued to the pages and couldn’t put it down, which resulted in me reading most of it in one sitting. For now, it is only in Norwegian, but it will soon be published in other languages!
